Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft My story.

I was caught shoplifting at Urban Outfitters in California yesterday.

I went into the dressing room with a total of 8 items. The guy double counted and I should have took notice to that because they usually never do that. I brought extra items in because I wanted to walk out looking like I didn't take anything. I was going to take a dress, a tank top, and two shirts. I ripped the magnetic sensors off and took off the tags. I put the tank top ($58) and one of the shirts ($16) into the inner lining that had previously ripped due to a zipper malfunction and hid it there. I placed the tag into the clothing I was not going to take and wrapped the magnetic sensors into tissue paper I had in my bag to dispose once I got out of the fitting room. As I walked out, SURPRISNGLY the guy REcounted my items (I'VE NEVER SEEN THEM DO THIS) and as he took them from my hands, the tags fell off. The manager was right next to him so she took the items and asked me how did they appear there? I told her that I had no clue and I didn't even try on the skirt with the tags that fell off from. She didn't say anything else and then left. Oh and the magnetic sensors that I took off and placed in tissue paper. I took that out and gave it to my friend to dispose of, so as I walked out of the store, they were not present in my bag, but somehow the door still rang? I don't get it? and when they searched me, all they took was the shirts. Do they have an manual ringer to the door to catch me? and as I was walking in and out of the door, so was the worker. I heard that when workers leave the store, it also rings?! They took me to the back room and searched my bag and found the shirt and the tank top. I confessed and they took all my information down excluding my social security number. I am sixteen years old by the way and they were going to release me to my parents, but my parents were unreachable. They told me they were going to fine me and send it to my address. They called security, but security didn't do anything, but stand there. The manager gave me a number to call if I have any questions. I did not sign any papers. As security escorted me out of the mall, I asked him, on average how much would the fine be. He told me that chances are I would not get fine because in order to get fine, security would have to write a report and they didn't do anything, but stand there. Is this true? and on average, how much would my fine be, if I am to be fined? Will I have to go to court?

I feel so stupid.

I would like answers from people familiar with Loss Prevention or Law Enforcement, or previous shoplifters. Thanks.

I would say you stand an excellent chance (or your parents anyways) of getting a letter from the Stores Law firm for Civil Demand

We cannot say whether you will or wont just that its likely you will, or your parents will. Why that was said to you I do not know. Who said it Mall Security or Store Security?

The way I read this it was "Mall Security" who told you this. Well they have no knowledge or say so on whether the store seeks Civil Demand or not. They also have also have no knowledge on whether or not they (The store) write a report. In fact anytime and I mean anytime Loss prevention makes a stop they "must" write a report! To add to this when these reports are written a request for Civil Demand is usually automatically sought. It seems (to me at least) that these Mall cops gave you some bad info. Now it may be true but I side with Admin on this its likely you will get letter of Civil Demand.

Yeah, it was mall security. Will the civil demand be mailed under my name? And will my parents need any involvement in this? I am deciding to pay off the civil demand and when I do, is the store still able to press charges against me, since I know they have a year to file charges. Will I be able to go back into any Urban Outfitters?

I also submitted applications to several stores prior to this. Will they be notified? Will this ruin my chances of getting a job in just retail, or all jobs (fast food, etc)?

Since you are a minor it will go to your parents. The store has until the statute of limitations runs out to file charges. However if they did not at time its unlikely they will especially if you pay Civi Demand promptly

If the store that stopped you is a member of the retail theft database and so are stores you applied out yes they could cuase them not to hire you. Its also worth noting that many of these LP people know other LP's from other stores if they see you working in another store its possible they could alert that stores LP staff

By the way for your protection the store names were removed

I stole at an Urban Outfitters outside of my town (approximately 20miles) and the places I applied to were in my town. They entered information into a computer along with my dad's name. ><

That still does not say if the LP who stopped you will not know the LP at where you "might" be hired. They have forums sites as well many of them. Your post also does not say if the store who stopped you belongs to any retail theft database and if they entered your name. This means if any or all the stores you applied at are subscribers they will see you stole from at least one store

Thanks for all your information.

So as long as I pay the civil demand, everything should be fine, right?
Does this entitle experience for Loss Prevention in the future?
I'm not going to shoplift anymore.

Loss Prevention (or as I prefer Asset Protection) are a tight knit group. We tend to know each other (especially in mall settings) and like mentioned we have our own forums. There we discuss much including cases in some instances. I can tell you I have alerted other stores LP's if and when I see thieves from my store in their stores. I most certainly would make them aware if they had hired one! I can further tell you that any store that subcribes to retail theft database "will" run your name before hiring!
