Resident of CA and following dissolution of marriage, wondered if it is possible to request/insist on name change of former spouse? Understanding that anyone has the right to change their own name, can you insist through legal channels that someone relinquish their married name and return to their maiden name? Thanks.

No. You can't force your ex to change her name.
You could "insist" but the chances of that insistence being ordered by a judge is unlikely unless you have a very good reason.
