I signed a year lease, but found out I was pregnant and had to quit my job because of complications. I am a single mother of 2 now. I went into the office and explained my situation to them and filled out a paper saying I would be out for the 1st. and gave them their keys bc I had moved everything out already. Apparently, they went behind me and wrote a 3 in front of the 1, and now want 1200 because they said I got evicted bc i did not pay the rent?? I even offered to pay the month that I would not be there, but that was not good enough for them. They sent it to a collection agency and they contacted me. I let her know that I was a single mother, only getting 360 in child support and was pregnant, but agreed to pay 50 a month. i paid 2 months in a row, while still getting harassed by them. I mean calling 5 times a day, cursing, calling very early in the morning. I had the baby and was admitted into hospital for all kinds of infections and almost having a stroke and this woman was crazy and I finally told her I couldnt handle her calling me harassing me the day im getting out of hospital and she told me, Fine, dont worry about it. 2 months passed, and I hear from them again and agree to pay 50 month but they don't want it...they want it all..1200 and i have no income. my mother was the cosigner, but she has no income...we both dont work. I am going to continue to send my 50 a month and keep recipts...they said they will see me in court. What do you think will happen?

I can't believe you paid them anything. Its a scam. Nothing is going to happen. Let them take you to court. Get their address, send them a letter stating that you owe them nothing and that you do not wish to hear from them again. It's called a cease and desist letter. If they ignore you, call the police, and the federal trade commission concerning the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If it were me I would be suing the apartment complex for their part in this scam. If you want more info on that I'll try to give you more tonight.

Actually they have already violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act with the repeaded phone calls and the foul language. Pre the FTC, you need to contact your state attorney general's office to report these violations. And as stated send them a letter saying you don't owe the debt and to not contact you again. If they do, they are further in violation.
