My jurisdiction is: Maine
I am 20 years old and go to college in Maine. Last week I was unfortunately caught shoplifting, weird enough it was my first time doing it too. I was lucky enough to not get arrested but was issued a court summons instead. The item in question was a $20 video game. I am freaking out in a way due to the fact that would really like for my parents not to get involved and want to handle it myself. I was just wondering if this was considered a felony or not and just what the ramifications are going to be. Also what kind of fine am I looking at? Will i have to check any special boxes when applying for a job? how will this affect me in other ways I have not thought of? Please help, I would really like some answers, thanks.
