my boyfriend stole from the mall that equals about 520 dollars worth. he got letters that said the stores filed a civil claim towards him and he has to pay that money within 20 days of the date of the letters.
so im asking if there is any way that they could give him more time with the money
he has no job and he just turned 18
also people are telling us that the judge is going to fine him to on his court date???
any info would be useful this is his first offense and we dont know what to do

Re: need as much information about as possible

Each store he stole from will send him a Civil Demand request no doubt. The amount will depend on how much he stole and state law. Expect his total to be well over a grand from the stores combined. When he gets the letters (this could be days, weeks even, months) he should call the service who sent letters and discuss a payment plan

ok can i call for him and talk to them or does he have to? also like can one of the plans be by paying monthly, without percentages.. thank you for your help.

I know your concerend but theres no way to predict this. Your BF needs to consult with an Attorney and discuss Diversion as possible option but based on amount I doubt that is gonna fly. In fact depending on state he might be looking at felony charges

Yes payment plans can be made monthly. Usually they will try to get you to pay a large amount up front. Pay what you can afford first and foremost. If you can afford $50 a month, pay that. If you can afford more, pay that. The key is that you are sincere about making the effort to settle this debt. They will work with you if you are serious about getting it paid off. The civil demand collection agency wants to get their monies, so if you contact them (Do not ignore letters or phone calls) they can working something out with you. If you do not have a checking account where they can withdraw the money, ask about Western Union or an address where you can send money orders. The key here is to keep receipts that you did pay the money until the debt is paid in full.

Keep us informed as to how the situation turns out so that his incident can be a learning tool for others. Thanks and good luck to both of you.
