I really really need help. So yesterday I was caught shoplifting from Store name ( company). I took about 200$ worth of merchandise. They called the cops and they took down all my information, including my ownership of my car, but thankfully decided NOT to press criminal charges just to charge me civilly. The cops were really nice and just gave me a little lecture and left. The security from the store gave me a sheet to sign called "Notice of Intended Legal Action" and it states that I:

"took unlawful possession of its property and they intend to seek full compsensation from me in civil court for its financial losses from those alleged wrongful actions. the said financial losses include, but are not limited to: the cost of any merchandise taken; the cost of the investigator's time; the adverse impact on customers of Company, the costs incurred incurred in attempting to prevent such activity and such other costs as may be deemed appropriate in the circumstances."

Then the next paragraph states:

"subject to the said investiagtion by The Company, i will be notified of the specific amount being claimed. in the event that i fail to pay the amount, The Company reserves the right to commence legal proceedings against me before a civil court and claim all damages it has incurred. "

After i signed this sheet, he told me that The Company will fine me in the mail $300 and if i don't pay it i will be sued and then he let me go.

Can anyone please help me in knowing:

1.) if the fine will be higher
2.) if i will need a lawyer
3.) if i can pay it without getting my parents to find out (i'm 21)
4.) if once i pay this Civil recovery everything will be back to normal
5.) what it means when it says "seek recompensation in civil court (if its just a fine)
6.) should i be worried?

Please and thanks in advance. i'm scared and don't know what to do with myself, i've never been more worried in my life.

Before I answer I should warn you that this site frowns on naming the store. You might edit your post

1.) if the fine will be higherDoubtful but we cannot say for certain. If they told you $300.00 then its probably $300.00
2.) if i will need a lawyer No unless you choose to fight Civil action
3.) if i can pay it without getting my parents to find out (i'm 21)Your an adult they don't need to tell your parents
4.) if once i pay this Civil recovery everything will be back to normal Should be
5.) what it means when it says "seek recompensation in civil court (if its just a fine)Its a Civil action just pay it and its over
6.) should i be worried?About what? You need to be more specific

I'm sorry, I did not know that we shouldn't write the name of the store. I don't see an edit button.

And to be more specific in regard of being worried, i'm just scared that they might seek legal action like trying to charge me criminally. Are they aloud to do that once they let me go and they settled on civil court?
Also, if they charge you civilly, that means that they don't have me on record and all that stuff, but why did they write down all my details, like my license plate, my ownership/insurance? IS there a reason that they did that? because what does my car have anything to do with what I did. My dad pays for my insurance/car so will he be contacted?

Paying the Civil Demand does not guarantee they wont press criminal charges. However they would hav eno reason to. Not paying could provoke those charges being filed. The Police should have a record only because they showed up. The store will have a record and any retail theft database they might input your name in. Now if your concern in criminal background check you should be fine

Why would they press criminal charges if it was settled that they weren't going to then, especially since the cops were there? what would be the reasons that they would choose to press criminal charges? I don't care about the fine, i'll pay it if i never have to worry about this again.

Your asking me to crawl inside their heads I cant! Its not likely but it could happen. If it did it would likely be because of additional info they found out like prior thefts, more stolen property, damages not orignally seen are a few that come to mind. You really dont have anything to worry about just pay the Civil Demand and put this behind you

We prosecute even after being paid Civil Demand.

Civil Demand is what a lot of store use to offset the cost of having to hire store security. If people didn't steal, they wouldn't have to spend the money on guys like me or my employees to catch shoplifters.

If the store and the police said they weren't going to press charges then and that I had nothing to worry about, why would they after? I'm just curious.
