Need to break lease

I rely solely on social security for my income. I am locked into my lease until 02/01/09. Due to recent health problems (renal failure, cancer, glaucoma) and an abusive live-in boyfriend I want to break my lease and move closer to my family. If I leave without permission of my landlord, can he sue me and take a portion of my social security to obtain the lost rent? Thank you for your help.

He can sue you because you have signed a lease agreement which I am sure has a clause about breaking the lease before the lease expires and lists the penalties that you will incurr for doing that. Take a proactive role and ask him if, due to your situation, he can release you from the agreement with no penalties or minimum penalties. Good Luck!
