Need to take ex to court but lives in diff state

I live in PA, my ex moved to VA. How do I take him to small claims court?

In small claims, you usually sue them in the state they currently reside in. Consult VA's courts website for information on how to commence a claim there.

So to get the money he owes me I'll have to drive there!?
Even though the incident occurred while he resided in PA?

You'll certainly need to file your small claims suit in VA where the defendant resides. I don't know whether you'll need to drive there. Some small claims registries except filing by mail or over the internet, or you might retain someone to act as agent for you in VA.

Or you can sue in regular court in your home state, obtain a judgment against him, and then enforce it in VA.
