I had a very good friend which past away a month ago. About three months before we found out how sick he was he told me that he included me in his will and want me to know about it should anything happen to him. I am in contact with his family but have a feeling that they are keeping things from me because they haven't mentioned anything to me about anything coming me way. The other problem I have is that I live in SA and he lived in the US so it is not easy for me to find out what is happening with his estate. What must I do to find out what is going on. His ex although they were never divorced but separated for 8 years all of a sudden came back onto the seen and moved into his house. How long does it take for a will to be finalized in the US and will the lawyers contact me and how do I know if they are not trying to keep my inheritance away from me. Im only in SA for another month then I will be living in another country, so if it takes longer then another month for the will to be settled, how would they get hold of me. I don't know who his lawyer is either.

If you're in the will, the administrator will try to contact you. You could contact the probate court in the county in which the deceased lived. You could also retain a US attorney to represent your interests. If you can't be present, that's probably the easiest way to find out if you've been granted anything.

Thanks for your help, I actually knew that was about my only option but thought that maybe there was an easier way. I loved that man to much to get involved in a family twist so will leave it at that, if I was added in the will then they must contact me otherwise if they want to keep it from me then so be it, I want to remember him and not how much pain it cost me to get the inheritance he wanted to leave me.

God bless you.
If they stole it, you weren't meant to have it.
The memory of a loved one, is worth so much more than any gift they might have left us.
