So in the beginning of January I was fired from my place of work (I was the assistant manager) because of theft. I was in such a daze (plus the meeting was held on a non-work day for me so I had to bring my son) that I hardly remember what happened…all I remember was that the LP manager was on the phone with me while my district manager was present and he said a few dates back to me and asked what had happened on those dates and if there was anything I needed to tell them. They asked about a few items of clothing (a jacket I remember them asking about in particular) Then they mentioned me closing the store early one day (which was a complete accident! I had closed the store 5 minutes early by pressing the wrong button on the register) and they told me that this was considered theft and they mentioned a few times that I had worn merchandise on the sales floor that I had not purchased (which was a very common procedure at the store, I was just following the example of my manager). Then they asked if I had ever taken anything out of the store without purchasing it (I had but it was because the employee at my work forgot to ring the item up, I was in a hurry and I didn't double check…so I purchased it the next day when I found out.) However I have stolen from there maybe…4 or 5 times, no excuses I was an idiot, but they never mentioned anything about this while firing me or mention anything so ever about police I don't believe they have cameras and am pretty sure someone that had a vendeta about me from work called the LP hotline to rat on me about the things I DID get in trouble for (she had threatened my job three weeks prior to me getting fired.). Anyways all these things (besides the ACTUAL theft) I had to write onto a statement and sign….again I had my son and was distracted so I signed it they escorted me out and I left. The next day I called the HR office to tell them a few things and beg for me to keep my job, but they told me the best they could do was give me my unemployment. I had NO idea that the cops would be involved but that is just what happened! This was two months ago and now all of the sudden a cop comes to my door yesterday. I was not home but when I found out he had been there I gave the officer a call. He was very non-chalant and nice on the phone. He told me right away that he was not coming to arrest me he just wanted to come and talk to me. However I am so nervous as to why he is coming to talk. I am out of town until Wednesday but that didn't seem to bother him at all, he said he would call me and we could set up a time to talk. He wouldn't tell me what it was about all he told me was that he wasn't there to arrest me and that it had to do with my old place of work. I have been a nervous anxious wreck the past 24 hours and my fiancé tells me that he probably just wants my side of the story and to follow up…but I'm just not that sure. Can you give me any advice as to why a police officer would want to talk to me so long after my incident? Thank You! Please get back to me ASAP!

Under no circumstances do you answer any Police questions without an Attorney present! They want to talk to you to build a case if they dont have one already. Just because he said he wasnt going to to arrest you doesnt mean hes telling the truth. Start calling Lawyers first thing in the morning!!

*phew* thank you so much! Im so glad I didnt listen to anyone who wanted to make this not seem like a big deal! But now I have a few questions. When this police officer calls me to set up an appointment do I tell him that I can't talk to him until I have an attorney? What if they decide to arrest me and hold me until I do have one or can they even do that? And does this also mean that the place I used to work for doesn't have any sort of concrete evidence like video tape? Thanks Again! you have been a HUGE help!

Depending on the charge and severity they might jail you yes. That doesnt change anything. If you tell them anything it can be used against you. Start calling Lawyers and get free consultations ask them for advice. If Police again call tell them the truth you would like an Attorney present during questioning. They wont like it but its for your protection.

So since this is my first offense...and the cost of what I stole is about 500 bucks (maybe less) what could happen to me? My brain is just going and thinking the worst...im seeing lawyers tomorrow but I would still like a general idea...Im not going to go to jail am I? I figure probation, banned from all stores, pay a restitution....but they cant even keep rapists in jail, so i shouldnt have to worry....should I?

Oregon...? But the thing is is that wouldn't they have told me when I was getting fired or at least at some point in the last three months? if they have evidence like video tape they wouldnt have taken 4 days to fire me while I was suspended and the officer would have been coming to arrest me, right? I mean...if they did have something like video tape? Wouldnt that just automatically prove it what I did wrong? Why would it take so long? It seems silly to me?

You have not yet reached the felony threshold for dollar value. However this does not mean they still cant file felony charges. You need to talk to a Lawyer

Soooo....something I forgot to mention in my huge long story was that my unemployment insurance had been canceled 5 days before the cop arrived at my door. I talked to lawyer and he's fairly positive that what probably happened was that unemployment (since they have been backed up quite a bit) finally got around to verifying my insurance and when they called the store i got fired from they found out that it was because of theft therefore cancelling my benefits. Then unemployment probably followed up with the police because it is considered unemployment fraud and now the police are coming to my door to inform me of all this and what could happen because of it. Does this seem like a likely possibility?
