I worked for a family buisness for 9 years, the store that I worked at burned down. I was told over the phone that it was slow and I would be back in January of 2008. This was September of 2007. I filed for and received unemployment, well January came around and I wasn't brought back although customers were told I would be back that month. So my question is this, I was never fired or laid off but customers were told I didn't work there any longer, shouldn't I have received something in writing since I was never let go? And are there any legal actions I can take against the company?

What legal actions are you interested in taking? They aren't required to rehire you or keep you on at all. No NO NO you have no legal action against the company and they don't have to give you anything in writing saying that you are no longer employed. Be thankful they gave you a job in the first place and go find another one if they can not rehire you. Good luck.
