What are the potential legal obligations for a person who discovers he's the father of an 18 year old child if paternity was never previously established? Several specific questions:
1) If the mother received welfare and never reported the fathers name?
2) If the 18 year old is in college?
3) Can the 18 year old, mother, or state sue for back support or future support?

The mother might be able to go back a couple years but you really should google the child support laws and establishing paternity for the state.

If the mother received welfare, the father likely is going to have to repay the state.

The 18 year old cannot sue for anything, only the mother and support generally stops at 18 unless they are in a state where emancipation is 19 or 21. Most states its 18 with a couple exceptions (NY, etc)
