new car, missing title holder

I recently bought a car, & like a moron, I didn't get a receipt. So when I went to the DMV to register it in my name, I was told that the previous owner did not sign a bill of sale or turn in a smog check certification. When I called the previous "owner" about this matter, she informed me that the car was NEVER in her name & doesn't know the old title holder. Not only that, but she said she already spent all of the money I gave her. At this point, I just want to return the car & get my money back. I do not have a receipt to the sale, but I do have witnesses to both the sale & to her saying that she "sold" the car to me & spent the money. What can I do?

What did you get when you bought the car? a title, bill of sale? anything? you may be SOL -- you might have to sue her in small claims--

I got the pink slip and registration

Who ever is on the pink slip needs to sign off on it-- is that not this woman? Who is the registration under? that is the person that needs to sign off on it-- i would put this lady to work-- she needs to locate these people to sign off on the car or you need to file a lawsuit for for your $$ back --
