The landlord in my new apartment complex is requiring us to buy renter's insurance in order to move in. I have lived in apartments all of my life and have never heard of this. I know that all apartment owners are required to have insurance on their property, in case of damage, fire, flood, ect. but it is normally up to the individual renter to decide whether they need the insurance for their own individual property.

Is this legal?

Q: Is this legal?

A: Yes.

Buy the insurance....just because you have not heard of it before, does not mean it is illegal....you should have it ANYWAY to protect your belongings.

Renters insurance is VERY cheap. I doubt this request is illegal but it is smart. Renters insurance will cover your personal belongings as well as protect you from liability if a flood or fire breaks out in your unit. If you damage someone else's property, you are responsible, not the landlord. The landlord's dwelling insurance covers the dwelling only and has a high deductible. I cannot tell you how many people get screwed because they do not have renters insurance. You can usually get it for less than 20.00 a month.

Buy It

The landlord is smart! I just lost everything in an apartment fire that wasn't my fault. If something happens you are responsoible for your personal things, not anyone else. It's about 10$$ a month!

ON the same note, is it a breach of Lease if it states that you will have renters insurance with the land lord named additionally insured and and the tenant does not obtian this policy? If so, reson to evict?
