A new tenant took over our lease. The landlord wrote a new contract for the new tenant. This is not a sublet, but a new contract between the LL and new tenant. Now the tenant is bouncing checks to the LL. The Landlord is coming back to us and trying to hold us liable for the old lease. Can the Landlord do that legally since we moved out and returned the key as per the LL directions ? Isn't bouncing checks criminal fraud ?

Lets drop bad check issue it not your problem its tenant and Landlord. This is not a sublet its new tenancy? Were you on a lease? Did it expire? Did you leave before lease expiration? If so what agreement did you and Landlord have for early termination? This is the beginning of my questions

The lease had 6 months to go and the LL said if I found them a new tenent, they would let me out and sign a new lease with the new tenent. This is not a sublet. I found a new tenent, the LL dealt with them directly, sent them a new contract which they signed and told me to vacate and to surrender the keys to new tenent and LL which I did. The new tenent is living in the apt. I did not get anything in writing yet from the LL, but their e-mails seem to acknowledge that they have a new non-paying tenent they want to evict. The LL still has my deposit and lthe final months rent. Am I still liable for the rent at this point if the new tenent does not pay ?
