I recently resigned from my job as reporter at a small paper in northern California. I was originally hired in Dec. of 06 and although the pay was very minimal I was able to do the writing portion from home. So, a part time reporter making $8.24 an hour. (I know) Anyhow, in August the paper was purchased by a much larger media/communications company. Long story short, they made it so I was no longer able to write/work from home, which was the only reason I took the job in the first place (so I could still be a stay at home mom.) So, I gave my two weeks and December 12, 2007 was my last day. Back when the new company bought our paper, we all had to go through new hire packets, which included a no-compete form that I signed. I don't know what I did with it, but now I am wondering if it is binding.
What I am hoping to do is start a small, bi-monthly newspaper that reports on the community happenings. The paper I worked for was a county wide newspaper and I would focus more on one of the towns in the county. What are some of the problems I might face legally, should I move forward with my plans??? Help!!!!

California frowns on non-compete agreements. The best thing you could do would be to find it, wherever you put it, and have a CA attorney review it. It may not be enforceable under state law.
