No Pet clause in lease agreement

Verbally, our landlord agreed to let us adopt a dog. The following day when they were contacted by the shelter we were adopting from, the landlord declined allowing us to go ahead with the adoption due to (what we be believe) being told the dogs breeding was boxer/pitbull mix.

The landlord claims that she spoke with her lawyer prior to the shelter calling her, and was advised to not let us go ahead with the adoption because should the dog escape and cause harm, then she would be held accountable. But our signed lease agreement states that the tenants will assume all liability for harm caused to individuals, if not related to the landlord's negligence. On top of that, there is no "no pet" clause in the agreement.

Therefore my question is whether we have a legal right to adopt this dog, without the landlord's permission as the agreement states all liability is on the tenant and there is no mention of pets not being allowed?

A: You do not have a legal right to adopt the dog. That clause would not stop someone from suing the landlord.
