Had an employee that signed a employment contract which states "for a period of 6 months after the end of employment, the Employee shall not control, consult to or be employed by any business similar to that conducted by the company, either by soliciting any of its accounts or by operating within the Employer's general trading area". The employee left our business and went directly to work for our competition. What are my legal rights and what grounds do I have for a lawsuit?

Enforce the non compete.

Is this just a matter of contacting a lawyer and the lawyer sending a letter to the ex-employee? How do I enfore this contract?

You should contact your attorney so he can then send the appropriate correspondence to the respective parties. Good Luck!
