My mother had lived with "Bob" for almost 40 years. He isn't my legal father but raised me from 7 on up. "Bob" died a month ago. They were not legally married. We have received refund checks for vehicle insurance and cell phone that I cancelled that was prepaid by "Bob". They had a joint checking account and when he passed, I closed that account and opened a new one for my Mother. We have received the refund checks but the companies issued the directly to "Bob". I asked if they would reissue to my Mother or at least the funeral home and I was told no, they have to go to "Bob". If I give them a copy of the death certificate and the check copy written to them and showing their names, that be wo

You should have left that joint account alone until everything was all the way completed. Once she gets the death certificate maybe they will issue it to both of them, if her name is anywhere on it, but i doubt it will be since they were not married.
