Due to layoffs and other financial problems, I had a creditor file a judgement on me and now I'm about to be served "Notice of Exemptions." Where can I find my rights on this and what am I allowed to exempt from this creditor.

Thank you in advance.

Depends on what state you are in, but generally the court allows a $1,000.00 personal property exemption. That means if you have a tv, couch, or car, claim them as exempt from execution. Also, cash in a bank account may be claimed exempt via personal property exemption. The thinking is, "a creditor cannot make a person destitute."
Other than that, child support, social security, and some pensions are exempt. You can go to the court house and ask for the list of anything else that may be exempt. Remember though- if your personal property exemption is $1000.00, and your car is worth more- say goodbye to the car.
