Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft NYC shoplifting

My son , 20 years old, stole a bracelet valued at $400 in NYC . He was arrested and given an appearance ticket. This is his first offense. He can't afford an attorney and will use the public defender. How does one go about securing a public defender? I presume he needs to have counsel when he goes in front of the judge.

Yes needs a Lawyer going without one is suicide. Many Attorneys offer free consultations he should get as many as he can. Ask them if Diversion is option in his case. When he goes to court he should have a Lawyer with him. If he cannot afford counsel then he should stand mute or enter not guilty plea and ask for Public Defender. When he talks to PD he can then discuss what he talked about with other Attorneys
