Okay, so I'm a 19 year old living in the state of virginia and I had a juvenile felony when i was 16. Anyway, I live in the northern part of the state but i'm currently visiting my friend at college, which is 4 hours south of my place of residence. Last night my friends and i were walking around near campus drunk and eventually went to a local 7-11. We went in to buy stuff and I spontaneously just picked up a bag of candy (less than 2 dollars) and pocketed it. As we walked out, an employee apparently noticed me and hailed down a cop that was nearby. The police took my information and gave me a court summons in the town i was visiting.

So the problems I have are as follows:

1. I have none of my own transportation (got a ride from a friend) and my parents wouldn't be able to give me a ride (i'd rather not tell them in the first place). Is there anything I can do to avoid having to drive 4-5 hours to court?

2. What implications will my juvenile felony cause (pretty sure it's irrellevent since I was under 18, but i just want to double check)

3. Can i get an estimation or an educated guess on my sentence? How likely is probation? Will I face jailtime? Will this hazard me from getting a job in the future? Ect...

Thanks in advance.

Hire an Attorney have him appear for you

Probably none

VA has the toughest shoplifting law sin states ther emight be jail time. You should consult an Attorney right away

Also wait for NormanJr to reply as he is more familar with VA law than I

You will most likely have to appear in front of the court at least once. To minimize your time in court, contact a local attorney (I think I have an idea what town this occurred in - you can PM me if you would like and I can give you some numbers to call).

most likely if will not have an effect, but you never know. These records are not sealed to the courts.

Being it is a college town, if you show up for court with an attorney and don't act ignorant, I am guessing you can get off with a lot of community service and fines. Also, have you attorney talk to the courts about transfering your sentence to the courts in NOVA so you can do your community service there.

Thanks for the responses. I left something out though.

When I left the store, a female (huge bulky black woman) got in front of me and asked me to come back in the store. I refused and she wrapped her arms around me so I was unable to move. While she was doing that another employee grabbed my shoulders from the back.

Would this be grounds to have my charge dropped?

No. First off it has nothing to do with the theft. Second they are legally allowed to use reasonable force if you refuse to be cooperative.

What the store employees do has no relevance to your case. You can be charged with theft on the basis that you removed merchandise from the store without offering payment for it.

The employees can beat the crap out of you, they can give you roses and a free ticket to the movies, they can stomp your face into the ground, but that does not change the fact that you stole. Now if the cops decide to charge the store employees or if you have a civil suit, who knows.

You stole, the facts and evidence is there to support that. Obtain legal counsel and figure out a way to mitigate the impact this has on you.
