On what grounds does one get a ticket for throwing a cig on Bay Bridge?

On what grounds does one get a ticket for throwing a cigarette out on the Bay Bridge? There is no sign that says no smoking on the bay bridge? I was told the fine can be around 1000 and up.. What do I do? Can anyone advise while I am waiting for a letter from the court? Thank you...

Littering?

I've always lived in the midwest, and have only been to CA once, but even I know it's against the law to throw a butt out of your car window in CA. Though the charge may be littering, I think the original law targeting butts was in response to the number of devastating fires they started.

What code section were you cited for?

And if no letter shows up, be sure to show up on the court date as indicated on the citation.

Most likely you were cited under Vehicle Code 23111, which covers a burning or glowing item being thrown from a vehicle, and includes lit or unlit cigarettes. It is a violation on any public highway, not just on the Bay Bridge.
