My jurisdiction is: North Carolina
I have a complicated situation.
I have a warrant for my arrest in Hawaii from 2008, for a felony larceny charge (theft 2).
I only became aware of this when I was arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina for a misdemeanor larceny. I was detained for almost 2 weeks on account of my fugitive warrant. As soon as I came before a judge, he unsecured my bond and released me. I still have no information on whether Hawaii will extradite me - my public defender says he doubts it on account of the charge, and the distance.
I was arrested in June 2008 for theft in Honolulu, but was never notified that I was being charged - I made sure to give Honolulu Police Department all my contact information in NC yet heard nothing - no warrant, nothing by mail or phone for over a year. The first time I became aware of the warrant was in August 2009 in Charlotte NC!!!
I do not know what to do at this point - do I hire a private lawyer in Hawaii to represent me? Do I have to return to Hawaii to take care of the warrant?? I have no prior record at all, am 21 years old, a full time student in NC - do you think I will get jail time over the charge in Hawaii? Any legal advice at all will be much appreciated!!
