I'm seventeen years old and I have no prior offenses.
I was caught shoplifting yesterday an amount of around $133.oo from a department store in MI.
I was escorted into the security office where they preceeded to tell me they had watched myself, and friend stealing the past few months.
They said to forget about the prior times and banned my friend and gave her a restitution (i beilieve, i'm not really sure) saying what she had to pay for from the previous times. and allowed her to leave.
They then also banned me and took my picture for the store use.
They told me that they were calling the police and with it being a first offense and low dollar amount they said it was unlikely for them to come. but that they would be contacting me by mail.
Can anyone tell me what will most likely happen?

what exactly is a civil demand letter? a type of fine from the store?
and if they press charges, what will then happen?

Civil Demand is a civil fine from the store. The letter usually comes from a Law Firm. If you read the section on Civil Demand on this site you can learn more about this. If criminal charges are filed then youwill have a court date. If that happens you should start calling lawyers and when you talk to them ask about Diversion

Another question I have but forgot to ask.
If I were being charged with a misdemeanor, would they have told me at the department store or would I find out via the letter or letters that I am getting in the mail?

the police did not come but the store told me that they were called, I did not hear the lp make the call though. someone told me they may have told me that the police were called only to scare me, which sounds very unlikely to me.
