Overcharging debt

I went to a chiropractor to get an adjustment. It was the first time I had seen this doctor based on a recommendation. After he adjusted my shoulders only, I was in pain for a week. I disputed his charges and his treatment. I ultimately owed $60 and for a while I refused to pay. Once it went to a collection agency I decided I should pay the bill because I didn't want it to negatively effect my credit report. The collection agency was trying to charge me $110  when the bill was only $60. I payed the $60 that I owed and that was it. There is now a $50 non payment on my credit report. I contacted the collection agency and they stated that they sent me a letter stating that I would have to pay all related charges for them to collect the debt. Is this legal? I don't see how I would owe $50 more than what the bill actually was. Any advice.

You are generally responsible for any debt you incure, PLUS any expenses involved in collecting that debt. Be glad he used a collection agency instead of a lawyer, agency fees are far less than lawyer fees!

It seems a little unfair for them to charge 90% interest on collecting a debt. I was disputing the charges and the services provided ultimately resulting in collections. As soon as it went to collections I paid the bill. I wouldn't think that it costs $50 to send a letter. :(

Everything that I have read states that under normal circumstances the collection agency would get a cut of the money collected. Meaning they just try and collect what was owed. It was hard enough collecting $60, why would they think they could collect more? Also, it is recommended that you pay the creditor directly and not the collection agency because the consumer did not have a direct relationship with the collection agency but did have a relationship with the creditor.

From my experience a collection agency can bill you for whatever ammount they wish - even if you dont owe a single cent to anyone. Collect Corp does this to people for spare change and they dont even bother to tell you they want money from you, they just file an R9 just to make sure they screw you.
