I was undecided about renting a home because it had attached in-law quarters that was already rented out. I visited the home a couple of times and even visited with the people who were living in the in-law quarters, because I was unsure because basically I've never lived in a duplex before and you can never be sure if you will get a long with neighbors that close. I told the person who owned the home that I was really struggling about coming up with a decision, because I really liked the house but didn't know if I would like living that close to people. We would be sharing the yard, pool, hot tub, etc. While I was trying to make up my mind, the owners had called me twice to see if I had made a decision, I did not ask them to hold it or do anything to keep them from renting it out, while I tried to make up my mind. They told me that they thought about living in it at one time, because they would have no problem living next to the renters of the in-law quarters, but decided not to because there was not enough bedrooms. They also said they would offer me a 6 month lease instead of a year incase for some reason we did not like the other renters. They said after the 1st 6 month lease I could then sign another 6 month lease and then month to month after that. I decided to rent the home.
I made the decision before I moved in that I would end up staying there for more than 6 months, and that I would renew the lease agreement after the 1st 6 months I rented the previous house that I was in for 4 years so I intended to stay as long as I could. I did not have the owner redo the contract because at the time I thought all was well.
Before I moved in, I bought over $200 worth of paint and supplies to paint ceilings, etc. I also had to buy 13 blinds for the entire house because there was nothing up for privacy on the windows, I paid to have my telephone service moved, had to have a jack installed in the home and not to mention the expenses of a rental truck, time off work to move in, had alarm service activated for 1 year and all of the time that was put in painting and installing blinds.
I had spoken with the owners within 2 weeks of living there and told them that things have worked out perfectly, we enjoyed living next door to the current in law suite renters and that my 7 year old daughter had adopted them as her grandparents, and they the same with her, and that they are now watching her over the summer months and after school later in the year.
I have been there for exactly 1 month, when I received a call from the owner that someone was coming over within 1 hour to look at the house – and that I needed to step outside so the people coming over would feel comfortable walking through the house. He informed me that the house was up for sale (there is no for sale sign up in the yard or anywhere near). I told the owner that he misrepresented the house to me and never told me that the house was up for sale. Had he told me the house was up for sale, I never would have moved into it knowing that it was for sale and on top of that I never would have done any updates to the house on the inside at my own expense. He then lied to me and told me that he thought I knew he would be trying to sell it. And that's what you get when you rent. After the people came over, I then had to explain to my daughter, that we might have to move again to only have her sobbing because she didn't want to leave her "adopted" grandparents.
I know that I can't stop him from selling the home, and I don't have to move out until my lease is up in November, but can't I somehow recoup some of the expenses that I will be incurring after yet another move and for the expenses it cost me to move there in the first place since he misrepresented the house to me?
