I was paced in VA doing 90 in a 65 on I-95. I have to appear in court according to the officer because anything over the limit by 20mph is considered reckless driving.

I was wondering if anyone can give me any info. on what to expect as far as a fine, rulings, jail time, etc? I was up on a couple of law firm sites that dealt with traffic fines in Spotsylvania and it mentioned automatic jail time, etc.

No other tickets were issued, wasn't weaving in and out of traffic, or and traffic was very light.

Should I get a lawyer or do you ask for leniency from the court? Case is in Spotsylvania, VA.

I have gotten speeding tickets in VA before doing 82/55 and was able to drop it to just a speeding charge. Anything over 20 or 80mph is reckless driving. From decussions with troppers in VA they recommend taking a defensive driving class before going to court to show that you know it was a mistake. Its been about 5 years since I lived in VA, but I got out of 2 "reckless driving" tickets this way. No lawyer.

Today in VA, 90 in a 65 could earn you a license suspension, huge fine, 200%+ insurance increase over 3 years and potentially a few weekends in jail.

A lawyer could be a good investment.

Search the threads for more info.

I have a similar story that i would like some advice about.... I got caught for reckless driving this morning going from Fayetsville NC back up to northern VA, but I have a clean driving record, I am a newbie to the whole law system so forgive me if my questions sound dumfounded, but I was going 25 over in very light traffic going 10 above the speed of current traffic, I know I was not aggressively driving and weaving in and out of traffic, just a clear left lane, Anyways I do not want a reckless driving conviction on my record, and I want to know if there was any chance that I could get some leniency, Is a lawyer necessary?

Either way im taking a driving improvement class...

What state gave you the ticket? Any other tickets the past 3 years?

90 in a 65 is pretty bad in both states risking; big insurance increase, suspension of licence and in VA you risk a couple weekends in jail at that speed with a strict judge.

Some people have been able to handle this on their own (drop the charge one level) but a good lawyer has a much better chance to do better (costs more).

There is a lot of info here, just search the threads for the situation(s) closest to yours.

I wouldn't take the driving improvement class until you know if/when it can help you.
