Pay off, Don't Pay off?

My Signif. Other (SO) owes credit card over $8,000, all cash withdrawals. He has had seizures 3 times in the last year and has lost all his recent (1 minute ago) memory. He asks me what day it is 100 times a day. He only remembers things from 15+ years back. He has lost 30 lbs. in 2 months and doctors cannot find out why. Who will be liable for these charges if something happens to him (ie, he dies?) - his daughter (middle age - not at all equipped to pay off). Could I be held accountable? I left 6 years ago, got married, came back a year later - it is my house, got divorced. He stayed in the house while I was gone. We are more like best friends (no relations). It makes me ill seeing him pay $250/month and only about $85 is going to principle. If I could be held liable because he lives with me, I need to know now. I would like to help him if I could pay it off. What could I say to a credit card company to get them to work with me for a lower payoff - this was originally about $6000. Then when he paid $15/20 month, the number soared. Please help with info. Thank you.

You have no legal obligation to pay anyone else's debts. If he dies, the creditor loses. So relax, and make his last days comfortable.

You have a lot on your plate. You need not say anything to the credit card company, and obviously, he can't.

So, why are you worried about this? Did you surreptitiously have anything to do with the debt? Don't answer, just make him comfortable. You don't have to worry about these debts, and neither does he!

The creditors could possibly go after his estate after he dies - keep in mind that estate does not just mean property, it also means any money he has, etc. As long as you were not married to him, you have nothing to worry about.
