pay or let license suspend?

Hi, I just got my first two tickets EVER. For going 5 miles over the speed limit, and for not having my lights on a highway that requires them. The origional fines were $140 and $120. however I was hospitalized and failed to appear. now the fines are $896!!!! and they are going to suspend my license!

I wrote a declaration to the court explaining my situation, but it takes 5-6 weeks! I can not afford $896 unless I don't pay my rent!

My question is do I pay this outragious fee and keep them from suspending my license while they are reviewing my declaration? (which I am sure they will overturn) I don't want my license suspended. but will they r efund my money if they overturn my citations?

should I just wait for the declarations to go through the system?

What state? per the forum rules, you need to indicate your state in your posts as laws vary by state and no one can give a reasonably accurate answer without knowing where this has occurred.

It would also help to know the code section(s) you were charged with violating.

Only the clerk of court can help you. Go down to the court if possible rather than calling. Take your hospital records.
