A friend gave me money to pay my equity loan up (3800) but I told her I would pay her back when I had it. I paid back 200 and 300 a month for a while. She said not to worry only pay when I had it. I don't have a job anymore and cannot pay it. It was a verbal transaction. She left me a phone message saying that she will take drastic matters if I do not contact her in ten days. What is the best way to handle this. Originally it was a gift but I guess that is no longer the case.

Why are you saying that it was a gift? It sounds like you accepted the "gift" as a loan since you are repaying it...

Try to see if you can find a person who can mediate your conversation with her. Look up at the American Bar Association in your area for pro bono attorneys who can help you. Good luck!

If you have repaid some of it back then you have acknowledged it is not a gift. She can certainly sue you for what you owe her.
