paying estate debts

My wife's father passed away due to medication. There is a lawsuit that is almost finished. The money will go to the estate and then divided among the family. My question is this: Are credit cards required to be paid from the estate? We had to place her fathers death in the newspaper for any outstanding debts to contact us. The only one that did contact us, was a credit card company

Yes, they are. The executor of the estate is responsible for paying the debts before distributing it to the beneficiaries.

Thank you, our attorney for the estate is not sure if credit cards had to be paid. My wife is the executor of the estate. We just want to make sure everything is done right, so it does not come back on us.
