Paying the same bill twice?

This is not a real earth shattering problem but important to me.

My problem is Stephens and Micheals. They said I owed $200 from a hospital. I was sure it was paid and I did contact them and I had paid $150 into that account. I really thought I had paid the whole thing. George, from the hospital, even was kind enough to call "Stacy" and inform her about my payments and my balance was $100.00 owed. Seems the bill was $250.00 but I was ok with that and agreed to pay what was owed but no more.

Well...we agreed over the phone and I ended up payng them $110.00, the $10.00 for "handeling" or some darned thing...but seems that isn't going to be enough. I had sent a final payment letter with the $30.00 I gave as a last payment and said no more. I'm not paying twice over for the one bill.

And said no more letters and calls. I got a Voice Mail for Stephens and Micheals "attorney" which I havn't answered to. I'm just not goign to get into it over the phone with these people anymore. I'm an older lady with a very painful disablity and am on Social Security Disablity. I don't think they can touch that kind of income. I have nothing.

They sent me letters to "Take advantage of this offer" where you pay $100.00 to call it all even. When I was $40 into paying these guys they sent one of "take advantage...." letters with $160 balance and pay $96.00 and we'll call it even...sheesh. They have $110 out of me. Why can't they just call it even and leave me alone. Why should I pay this bill twice?

I have no problem paying what I owe. Would they get mean and sue me for $90.00? Now it's the priciple of the thing. The hospital was paid a big chunk of that bill in the first place and I never owed anymore the what the balance at the hospital.

Ignore these con-artists.
They'll bleed you dry.
You never owed these crooks a dime.
You owed the hospital.
But, by paying them, you stimulated and encouraged them.
Now, they're on a feeding frenzy.
They want more of your money.
They can't touch a dime of your social security money.
So, stop worrying and stressing.
No, they won't sue you.
They want to worry and scare the money out of you.

The lesson here, is never pay anyone BUT the person you owe (if you pay anyone at all).
Don't negotiate with thieves and con-artists.
They'll always screw you.

I really, really wanted to give that $100 to the hospital but George said he couldn't take it as the account has been sold to those guys...or whoever.

I won't pay them anymore. I really just wanted to do the right thing and they got their stupid $100 but the hospital had gotten $150 into that account. I don't know how it fouled up like that but it's not my doing.

I was looking over the FTC folks and they asked, in their form, if they asked for interest or anything like that....and their was that $10 "Extra" that "Stacy" wanted....so I did.

At any rate, since the hospital did get most of the bill paid I don't see how those characters can legally ask me for the same money already paid to the hospital.

It seems pretty petty of them...since all they wanted was the $100 in the first place to call it square. Also..in that final payment letter I told them no more calls or letters...and sure enuff ....there's the phone number with all 0's asking me to call their "attorney". I just can't call back...won't.

They also can't touch an account with $1000 in it....yuppers...that's me all right.

Thank you so much for words of encouragement. I really do need it. I shouldn't let them stress me but they do. I figure a letter will be coming soon enough.:angel
