Petition For Estate

My son was recently killed in an auto accident. He was 18 years old. I received a letter yesterday from my exwife's attorney stating that she has filed a petition to open an estate for my son. Enclosed was a Waiver of Notice of Heir for me to sign and have notorized. We live in Alabama. Can someone tell me what this is please

this notice is to let you know that she has opened succession. if he had children everything would go to the child. if not his assests should be split between the both of you. if there is a will it will be easier on both unless one constest the will. if there is no will then the court will find that he died intestate (without a will) and then the probate laws of alabama will be applied.
