This is my very first time. I went to WAL-MARt with a buddy and buddy was catch stealing Ipods. My friend got away and i got caught, and was escorted to the security office. they told me just because i was with my friend and knew what my friend was doing(stealing). At that time when we got caught, i didnt have any thing with me and i still will be charged with helping with stealing. At the end there's no way getting around it but to take the blame.

Two weeks back from now, WAL-MART's law of office sent a letter and saying that if i pays $225 they will drop the Civil Case and he will pay that amount.

i will have to go to court in the future. I have couple question that i want to ask.

1. do i need to hire a lawyer? I'm still just a student, is there any free lawyer and where i could find one?

2. will there be any jail time?

3. i heard of the Deferred judgment or diversion program. How could i apply for one? What is the requirement?

4. I read the previous thread. What is plea to the infraction? How does it work and how could it benefit me?

5. How long it will stay in my record?

6. Going to the counselors will be decide by the judge right?

I'm sorry for asking to many questions because i'm so scare right now. I dont know what will happen at the court. I dont want to go to jail. and i dont even have money to pay for the lawyer.

Please advice and help
Thank you so much for your help

Yes you need one…………if you cant afford one, the court would get you one.

2. will there be any jail time?
No jail time for first time offenders

3. i heard of the Deferred judgment or diversion program. How could i apply for one? What is the requirement?
You say you are innocent so consult with your lawyer before accepting blame……You might be able to get away free. The deferred program depends on your state, county and class of charge.

4. I read the previous thread. What is plea to the infraction? How does it work and how could it benefit me?
Infractions are pretty much crimes with no jail time…………fines mainly. Yours would not qualify.

5. How long it will stay in my record?
Depending on your state's law and if it is expugnable there.

6. Going to the counselors will be decide by the judge right?
Don't understand your question………….
