Hello, hoping to get some advice.
I was recently the victim of petty theft by a family member (a minor) that is now living in another state-New Mexico. This family member stole $55 out of my wallet, an Ipod, and a blank check. After this family member moved back to New Mexico, the family member set up an online pornography account using my name and social security number and had the monthly subscription charge taken out of my checking account. I do not have substantial proof that this family member committed these crimes but this is the only person that could have done this and had opportunity to do this.

Is there anything that I could do? Would I even be able to press charges in this situation and which jurasdiction would I go to-Maryland or New Mexico?

Thank you for your assistance.

Talk to the cops.

If it's a felony, they may extradite.

Also, this sounds like interstate stuff so there could be federal charges also.

Talk to your local cops where the crime occurred for advice. They would evaluate your evidence and follow if necessary what the seniorjudge outlined above.

Report the theft and your suspicions to the agency responsible for the location where the theft occurred. The chances of them solving it if the suspect is now in another state is slim to none unless he confesses. Even with a confession, unless this is a serious felony for some reason, the chances are they will not go through the expense to extradite.

Sorry, but you may have to write this off.
