I was caught shoplifting a pair of shorts and shirt from (deleted)today. The police were called and they said if it wasn't for my baby being with me, they would have taken me to jail. I have a court hearing in 5 days. Im not sure if I should plead guilty, not guilty or no content. I've never been in trouble with the law before, not even a traffic violation. Any advice would be so helpful, I'm scared to death! I've been diagnosed with depression and currently taking medication...although I have an appointment in 2 weeks with my doctor to see if he will change my medicine because it's not working for me. I'm so ashamed at what I did!

You need to talk to a lawyer & only to the lawyer. If you cannot afford one - go to court & plead not guilty & ask the court if they will appoint you a public defender. You might ask your lawyer about ACD or diversion. You will probably also receive a civil demand letter through the mail. It will be your decision whether to pay - you can discuss with your lawyer. Here is a link re civil demand letters.

I am a Retail theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. NO DO NOT plead guilty that is worst thing you can do. Plead not guilty and either hire a Lawyer ro request public defender. Once you talk to this Lawyer you can discuss your defense options. Be sure to ask about ACD or Diversion as plea option
