Ok so here's the story...
When i quit my last job, I took some merchandise from the employer on my last day. It was totaling about $115. Now, about a week after i quit, my old boss called up and asked if i knew what happened to the item, and i said i didn't know. About 2 weeks later her boss called me and said if i didn't call back he would call the authorities. I was in class at this time, and could not call back until 10ish, when he was not there. I left a message and he did not call back. Now... two months later, i get home from work, and my mom told me that there was an investigator here looking for me in regards to something that had happend during my employment.
Normally i would know what this is about. I happened to work Loss prevention (ironic i know) and worked on several cases during my employment. Now i know there is absolutely no proof at what i took. I took it in a spot where i could not been seen or recorded (in an office) and the item was already in there, so there is no tape of my going in there with an item. Also, this was a place that i was allowed in (LP office). so it was not trespatory in nature. I called the Investigator, and he has not called back yet. I have several questions regarding this and if you could respond it would be appreciated.
1. Would a large retailer pursue prosecution of such a small priced item even after 2-3 months?
2. Is there even enough proof for conviction? There is no tape. The item is no longer in my possession. 2 months have ellapsed.
3. If convicted, do i possibly face jail time? I have no prior convictions for anything, my record is clean except for a few speeding tickets and parking tickets, all which have been paid in full.
4. Is there a possiblilty that this is not even related??? is there a possibility that the investigator is trying to contact me for a case i worked on?
I'm not sure what to think at all. I feel that if they had enough proof to charge me with anything, they would have acted sooner, or they would have just arrested me. The fact of the matter is that they sent an investigator, which shows to me that they don't know all the facts, and might not even know anything, possibly they only going off the word of my previous employer. If thats the case, would they just question me and dismiss the case? Also, It would seem that it is only a misdemeanor charge and that an investigator would not like to spend his time working on this case. PLEASE RESPOND! if you would like, my email is RGOODHEART3@cox.net.
Thanks
