Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft petty theft question

I got caught stealing 208 dollars worth of stuff in April this year and right when I got out the door the loss prevention guy stopped me and took me to wait for the police then I was arrested and took to jail. I was fingerprinted and booked and held for about 3 hours then I got released with a promise to appear in court. My court date is July 8 and since I cant afford a laywer I was going to ask for a public defender. It is my first offence and I am in college so because of that is there a good chance that I wont do jail time. I also got a letter from the stores attorneys saying I had to pay the amount I took and I am making payments on that currently. The question I had is do they ususally give jail time or will I just get a fine and community service or something? And how much are the fines for petty theft usually for and how long do they give you to pay the fines? And I heard of diversion but I dont know what it is so if you can tell me what that is ?

What state are you in? And what code section were you cited for?

A fine and probation will be typical, along with suspended jail time. If jail time is sentenced, any future thefts of any kind can be charged as a felony.

Ok thanks for the help. What does suspended jail time mean does it mean none or a short time like 3 days
 
If time is suspended, it means that all or some of it is held back. If you violate the terms of probation, then you could be ordered to jail to serve the time.
