Im 18 and I live in California. I stole 206 dollars worth of stuff from JC Penny. It was all jewelry and clothes and the loss prevention guy got me going out the door and detained me until the police came. I signed this paper that the store was going to send me a bill for the stuff. should i have did that? When the police came I got handcuffed and booked and spent about 3 hours in jail then was released with a promise to appear in court. My court date is in July and this is my first time getting in trouble by the law for anything and I cant afford a laywer so I dont know should I plead guilty or not guilty or no contest? If I cant afford to pay the fines should i ask the judge for community service instead? Do they ususally give jail time or just fines because I dont want to do jail time? If I do have to pay the fines how long will I have to come up with the money?

This is just another question I have I got caught at around 230pm and I spent 3 hours being detained by the loss prevention people because they took long writing a report and I got to jail around 630 and didnt get to make a call until 740. isnt the law say after 3 hours they have to let you make a call because I asked the loss prevention if I can and they said not until the police come but if I was technically under arrest then didnt they have to let me call.

what if i cant afford a laywer? i know the court will give me a public defender but would I have to request one the day of my trial when i get there or do I have to call the court like a week before and ask for one? also whats diversion?

You can call court about Public Defender but in most cases this happens on first court appearence. Diversion programs vary and are not available everywhere. Asl your PD if this option in your case. Normally Diversion is like a conviction with fines, probation etc but once you complete program your case is dismissed. Therefore no criminal conviction.
