Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft Petty theft

Im 19 and this is my first time being in trouble with the law. I got caught stealing from JC Penny and the loss prevention guys took me and held me until the police came then I got arrested and booked and i was in jail for about 2 hours and they let me go with a promise to appear in court. Im not going to be able to afford a laywer. Should I ask the court for a PD or just go without any laywer or PD? When I go should I plead guilty or non guilty? If I plead guilty is there a good chance ill get jail time or just fines and probation? I dont want to get jail time I just want to get my fines and go? Since I have never been in trouble before and im in college is there a better chance I wont get jail time?
