Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft petty theft

i have been caught for petty theft by store theft prevention dept.this is my 1st offence and the police officer at the scene gave me citation as this was my 1st offence and didnt took me to police station.

i have a court case and the amount of theft was about $20.

what should i do.?
do i need a lawyer or ask for public defendent.how much will it cost.

i even dont know how this works.like i suppose jc penny will send me some kind of invoice which i have to pay.

Yes you need a Lawyer. Your looking at crimnal charges and criminal record. If you cannot afford one then ask for Public defender on your first court appearence.
