i was driving 55mph (stuck behind a truck) on 65mph highway (i5) when my radar detector goes off. there's a CHP in the meridean facing traffic. as i pass, he pulls out, turns on lights, gets behind me, & pulls me over.

he claims an airplane caught me doing 95mph+. ok, where i ask. he says road X/Y which is 20 MILES BEHIND US!

a few questions:

1. Does CA plane use radar or lines on the highway?

2. Can a plane see the license plate of a car?

3. I drive a porsche which is not entirely uncommon in this area; can make/color serve as identification?

4. Would a plane follow me 20 miles until he had ground patrol support?

5. Does ground patrol have to verify the speed the plane recorded?

for defenses, i considered:

A. It wasn't me, assuming (2), (3), & (4) are no. The officers would have no way to prove it was the same car.

B. If (5) is yes, then that would work too.

i can't find any info out there on plane tickets - any help is appreciated.

This should be fairly easy to beat. The airplance lost sight of you and you were in heavy traffic. Both officers will have to appear at your trial. I would show up for your court date and try to get a dismissal or traffic school. If that doesn't work, get a continuance in order to retain an attorney.

Funny, this has just happened to me, the officer said I was doing 100mph and I told him this was impossible in my truck, I drive a 2003 chevy suburb. This has a govenor on it that if you go 95mph the fuel shuts off . He was not happy about my responce, he sighted me and no sooner did I get back on the road, I was pulled over and ticketed again by a different officer who said the same thing that the pilot paced me at doing 85mph. Isn't that a speed trap and how did the pilot know it was me, there was so much traffic on the highway.
