I was stupid enough to took $16 stuff at a store 2 weeks ago and got caught. The LP lady gave me a civil demand notice and a banded notice but did not involve the police at the time. She told me that after I paid the civil demand within few weeks I will receive a letter then this whole thing is over. Their Corporate office will call her If I don't paid and then I will be arrested. Today they have cashed my check (for Civil demand).

My questions are:
1) What kind of letter she is talking about I will receive after I paid the civil demand?
2) Can I go on with my life now or I will still hear from the police or court?

Please help me!!

First, take a deep breath!! You will be fine. If they have casher your check, I would suspect that things are in the clear, but cannot say for sure. You committed a criminal offense and sometimes you have to go to court.

Now to answer your questions.

The letter will most likely be from the corporate offices telling you that your debt is paid in full, or that you owe more more. If you paid the amount that they asked for, and they cashed the check successfully (it did not bounce etc) then you will not owe any more of the CIVIL demand.

Due to the low dollar amount I find it highly unlikely that the police will be involved after the fact UNLESS you trespass, shoplift again or do not pay the civil demand. That being said, you are not in the clear until the statute of limitations runs out. For cases such as this, most states give the victim one year and day to file charges from the date of the offense.

If I were you, I would, stay away from this store and other stores in the chain. Steal no more. Life your life learning from this mistake. Teach others not to make the same mistake you did.

Remember, when you steal, it raises prices for all of us. If you don't have the money now and steal it, the price will go up and if/when you do have the money, you will pay more for the same product due to you stealing it. If you don't have the money the second time, you will steal it, causing the price to go up again. It is a vicious cycle.

Everything you do has an effect not only on you, but the people around you.
