Today I was terminated from my job because I admitted to stealing 2 money orders (totaling $1000), my boss and I made an agreement that if the funds were paid back, no charges would be made. My boss came to me in an email and said that there is cash missing, and he is accusing me of taking it, and is demanding payment for the cash. I did not take the cash, and he has no proof of me taking the cash. Can I be prosecuted for this? Also, the money orders that I admitted to were made out to me, in my name-legally, do I have to pay them back if they aren't even made out to the company? Thanks!

If those were us postal service money orders you could be charged with a Federal crime.

Yes, you COULD be prosecuted, depends on what your boss does. They kind of have you over a barrel.

They were not postal service money orders. I have every intent to pay back the $1000 that I agreed to, but now he is saying that I owe him more than I took. I feel awful for what I did, and I want to fix it without going to extremes. I'm not sure what to do about the missing cash that I am being accused of. I did not take it, and I can't pay it back, but he is threatening to take this further if I do not pay back all that he thinks that I took. What should I do?

If the money orders were made out to you, it still sounds like you were not entitled to cash them or have them made out to you. That is still stealing.

As far as the missing cash, you really should talk to an attorney. If they have no proof you took it, I would not pay it back.
