I was caught attempting to shoplift an item from Kroger (app $15 value) in Virginia. There were no police involved, I was not charged, but I had to sign a paper stating that I would not come back and that I may receive a civil demand letter.
About 2 weeks after the incident I received a civil demand letter for $300. I do not know what to do because I was caught shoplifting once before (approximately 2 years ago). On the first incident, police were called and I had to go to court, but once I arrived on the date of my hearing, my lawyer informed me that everything had been dropped. I never even set foot in the courtroom and to the best of my knowledge my lawyer said that nothing will be on my record. (When I was caught in Kroger I told all of this to the security guard who caught me).
WIll I be charged if I do not pay the civil demand? For that matter, will I be charged even if I do pay the civil demand? Please help I have no idea what to do.
