I am 32 years old with no existing record. My husband and I are trying to adopt. :/ Well we both got paycuts and I did something stupid. I needed a dress for an interview. I stole it. I've never done it before, and have learned my lesson. Problem is I CANNOT have a record, I dont have alot of Money and this could ruin our chances of adopting! I should have thought about it before, but I didn't. Im VERY regretful. I need 1- a reasonably priced Lawyer, and 2 to know if there's any way POSSIBLE to get this dismissed on my court date (with lawyer), I live in Forsyth County nc! Retail for dress=85

We dont do Attorney referrals here sorry. However start calling lawyers Monday morning. Many offer free consultations get as many as you can. When you meet with these Attorneys ask them if Diversion is option for you

These programs vary but to generalize they work like conviction with fines, probation, possible classes, etc. However once you complete program your case is dismissed. Once more these programs vary so ask the Attorneys you meet with

Also, I read about the judge dismissing the case of another shoplifter right away...due to a program to help prevent others from stealing..what's that?

Oh, I totally understand each judge is different. It can't hurt. I will try it out. You end up paying more in the end, and you aren't only hurting yourself, but also the companies. I should have known better, just because Im having it hard, doesnt justify stealing nor hurting others! Anyone else ever been there? Also, what's a prayer of judgement?

I go in to talk to my lawyer tomorrow. I was quoted 1200 start to finish, and this includes community service! Im not wanting to spend that much (but too bad). Does that sound "typical"? I know you can't quote me, but just on average, considering you hear alot of outcomes? He said it wont get to my record if I complete community service! Im still so ashamed, even though I know all will go away. The shame never does..I'm paying for my mistake, times 100! Ohhh and

2--What do I ask him when I go talk to him?

$1000-$1500 is typical for a misdemeanor theft charge if you get a private attorney. Go talk with the public defender and see if you qualify.

Go to the PD at least two business weeks prior to your court date and see if they can help you.

I have been saving for adoption and have money in the bank, don't think I will qualify. :/ I should have thought about the real costs.
