Police Report exists against me...?

I hope someone can help me, please...

4 years ago, my live-in partner and I got into a horrible argument, which led to a physical fight. He called 911 and reported me, who sent over police to take down my information. Over the next few days there was a flurry of calls from detectives and other members of the police force to record what had happened... foolishly, I chose to omit the details of the physical damage that was done to me and only reported my physical contact to my partner. Thankfully, no charges were filed against me, we made a peaceful apology to each other and left the other one alone.

I was recently speaking to a Canadian official, as I will be moving there from the states soon, and he informed me that my police report most likely still exists and it will bar me from entering the country to attend the school I was going to be heading to.

This is shattering for me. My question is, how can I find if a report is still existing against me? Can I see old reports that were filed?

The report almost certainly still exists. However, whether there is a record of it outside the reporting agency is doubtful if the matter never went to court.

Since state and local laws might vary as to whether you can see the report or not, you will have to call the agency that took the report and ask how you can see it .. and IF you can see it.

Thank you for your reply -

It never went to court. The whole thing was dropped by the Detective after my roommate and I made an agreement to move away from each other and leave each other alone.

Could that report alone bar me from immigrating and working in Canada? From what I understand they are being quite rough with who's allowed in and who isn't.

COULD it? Maybe. I don't know how strict Canada is on this issue. I wouldn't think it would, but you never know. It also depends on how deep they check on applicants for visas. I supervise my agency's records division and have yet to ever see a request from a foreign country asking for local records on a visa applicant, so I really doubt they are going to check that deep. Since you were never arrested (apparently) you do not have to answer "yes" to any such question. I would think the only thing you might have to answer "yes" to would be if they ask about any police contacts.

You might want to review the application you will have to complete and then decide if you need to worry.

You're correct - I was never arrested.

Thank you so much for all of your helpful information. I've been planning this move to Canada for years now - I do appreciate it!
