I was at my brother's new girlfriends house helping her move out and i saw a pouch on the floor on the street next to my car thinking i dropped it from one of the boxes i was loading i picked it up, it had a id, bank card etc....... inside, i was going to give it back to the guy it belonged too, but i was busy helping them move out, and forgot about it, a couple week later i got off really late from a party and i let my roommate drive, well my roommate is bipolar and the cops pulled us over, they though he was knocked up high on drugs and we were there to pick up, after they patted use down and searched my car for drugs, they found the pouch in my shirt pocket in the back seat, well i had nothing to explain to them why i had a id and a bank card that did not belong to me, and i also had no explanation why i did not return it sooner or why i did not report finding it to the police, they grilled me for over 30 minutes on if i had used the bank card or not and that if i did i should confess right away since it was probably on camera, since it was late (about 1:00) they told us to just go home but they said, that they would be sending a officer in the morning to return the id and bank card and to get a statement from the owner, if i had stolen his wallet or not........ they told me if the card cames back as being used or if the owner reports it stolen i would go to jail, should i hire a lawyer? i did not use that card i can swear to god on that, nor did i steal this guys wallet, but it looked like the pouch was ripped and the contents split out, if the person who did steal it, took the credit cards etc....... and used them would i get in trouble..... sigh im such a idiot for not leaving them on the floor my life is screwed up already.

Well... pardon the honesty, but this is not a very convincing story. A reasonable person would do what the officers suggested when they arrested and questioned you. I am sure that if you were in the shoes of the person who had lost the wallet, you would be going nuts trying to figure out what happened. That being said, you will definetly need the advice of an attorney!

You don't have much to worry about if you dint use the card. getting an attorney never hurt anyone. It is not illegal to have someones bank card however it is illegal to use it without there consent. so as long as it was not used your should be ok.

Some IDs, cards, etc., have written on the card itself that if it is found, you are to mail it and postage will be paid.

Holding on to someone's important cards and such as you did is a pretty scummy thing to do.

thanks so much for that, i for dang sure did not use those cards since there cameras everywhere when you use a card, also the cops "held" on my atm, credits cards even though they had my name on them and only gave me back my drivers licence, should be worried? Should i cancel my atm and credit cards, or will the cops mail them back to me? or were the officers trying to teach me a lesson and threw my cards away?

It depends on state law. Many (most?) states have laws that obligate the finder to make a reasonable attempt to contact the owner of found property or face criminal charges. Mine is one of those states.

You might have to contact them and find out why they seized YOUR cards ... I can't think of a good reason to do so, but I don't know what they were thinking.

I can't imagine they will throw them away unless they want to become unemployed.
