Last night I got distracted and was pulled over for speeding (and also ticketed). The officer said he smelled cannabis and asked me to step out of the car. He then began to search me and told me he was going to bring the dogs to search the car and if I had anything, to let him know now. So I told him I had a pipe under the seat. He later found the small bag of marijuana in my pocket. I was arrested (first time) and charged with possession of under 10 grams of cannabis and the pipe used to inhale cannabis. (he told me it was just a city ordinance and would not go on my record) I live in Lake County, Illinois. What is the usual punishment here? I can not afford an attorney, should I request a public defender? How do you qualify for one? I use cannabis as an antidepressant, anxiety, and stress reliever and plan on seeing a doctor to receive medicine for this instead. I also told the cop this. Would this help my case if presented?
